How to become a Chartered Accountant

To become a Chartered Accountant (CA) in India, you need to pass three levels of examinations (Foundation, Intermediate, and Final) and complete a 3-year practical training period called articleship, all while registered with the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI). 

Here’s a step-by-step guide:

1. Educational Qualification:

  • 12th Grade: Complete your 12th standard education, preferably in the commerce stream. 

2. CA Foundation Course:

  • Enrollment: Register with the ICAI for the CA Foundation course. 
  • Exams: Prepare for and pass the CA Foundation exams, which cover basic accounting and auditing principles. 
  • Direct Entry Route (for graduates): Graduates can skip the Foundation course and directly enroll in the Intermediate course via the Direct Entry Route. 

3. CA Intermediate Course:

  • Registration:Register for the CA Intermediate course after passing the Foundation exam (or directly if eligible via the Direct Entry route). 
  • Exams:Prepare for and pass the CA Intermediate exams (two groups). 
  • Practical Training (Articleship):After passing at least one group of the Intermediate exam, register for a 3-year practical training program (articleship) under a practicing Chartered Accountant. 
  • ICITSS:Complete a 4-week Integrated Course on Information Technology and Soft Skills (ICITSS) before starting your articleship. 

4. CA Final Course:

  • Registration: Register for the CA Final course after completing or during the last six months of your articleship. 
  • Exams: Prepare for and pass the CA Final exams (two groups). 
  • AICITSS: Complete a 4-week Advanced Integrated Course on Information Technology and Soft Skills (AICITSS) during the last two years of your articleship. 

5. Membership:

  • ICAI Membership: After successfully completing all the exams and articleship, apply for membership with ICAI to become a qualified and certified Chartered Accountant.
